Of him, when considering the object upon which faith rests, the Prophet observes ‘that God is the only supreme governor and independent Being in whom all fulness and perfection dwell; who is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient; without beginning of days or end of life; and that in him every good gift and every good principle dwell; and that he is the Father of lights; in him the principle of faith dwells independently, and he is the object in whom the faith of all other rational and accountable beings centers for life and salvation.’ (Lectures on Faith, Joseph Smith)”

So today we’re going to talk about what those threeboldedwords actually mean, and why they’re true, and how they work (to an extent at least).

Omnipotent:

The simple definition: having all and unlimited power.

God is omnipotent. He has all power. He has unlimited power. He created all things. There is no power in existence that He does not have. A wonderful blessing He promises unto us is that we can gain omnipotence too, after we gain our exaltation. Exaltation is to give us everything that the Father has, including all power. Now let’s make some suppositions about that statement. Many will say, “If God gives me all the power He has, what is to stop me from overthrowing Him with that power?” Simply enough, God knows the intents of our hearts. He knows everything we desire, everything we know, everything about us, including every future that may come to pass for us, infinitely. The way the Atonement works is that every possible decision we could make has a future way down the line. Christ suffered for every POSSIBLE outcome, not just the outcome that actually will come to pass, thus preserving our agency (I can discuss more on that later sometime). In the same way, God will know if we have any kind of future where we would decide to overthrow Him in any way, and without true devotion for eternity, we cannot be exalted. He is our Creator in every form and we need to respect and worship Him in every way, shape, and form. That is exaltation, and that is why Heavenly Father is willing to give omnipotence to those who are exalted.

Omnipresent:

The simple definition: being everywhere at once.

God is omnipresent. He is everywhere at once. He knows all that occurs. D&C 88:41 says “He is above all things, and in all things, and is through all things, and is round about all things; and all things are by him, and of him, even God, forever and ever.” “God is an immanent Being, meaning that the light of Christ shines forth from him to fill all space. This ‘light proceedeth forth from the presence of God to fill the immensity of space—The light which is in all things, which giveth life to all things, which is the law by which all things are governed, even the power of God who sitteth upon his throne, who is in the bosom of eternity, who is in the midst of all things.’ (D&C 88:12-13)” -Bruce R. McConkie. God is the Creator; the power, light, influence, and spirit that goes forth from his person to fill all immensity is a creature of his creating. Romans 1:25 says, they had “changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshiped and served the creature more than the Creator.”

Omniscient:

The simple definition: having all and unlimited knowledge.

God is omniscient. He knows all things. He has all wisdom. He has all understanding. Nothing exists that He does not know. He is the One who gives the law to all things based on His knowledge of all things. Joseph Smith said, “Without the knowledge of all things God would not be able to save any portion of his creatures; and if it were not for the idea existing in the minds of men that God had all knowledge it would be impossible for them to exercise faith in him.” (Lectures on Faith)

So I hope this helps at least one person understand a little bit better about who God really is and what that can mean for them.
